Overview of November 2020 GCSE Results

Friday 15 Jan 2021

The November series was exceptional due to COVID-19 and the ongoing disruption to teaching and learning experienced by learners and centres in the 2020/21 academic year.

November 2020 saw the award of GCSE English Language, GCSE Mathematics, GCSE Mathematics-Numeracy and GCSE Welsh Language. We published official statistics[1] on November 2020 entries on 3 December 2020. Although entries are usually volatile for this series, there were substantial changes in entry patterns in comparison to November 2019 with a large reduction in overall entries. In some cases, the entry was predominantly made up of 17-year-olds as expected, but this was not true in all subjects.

We closely monitored WJEC’s delivery of these qualifications and the approach taken to awarding grades in this context. We are confident that processes were followed as planned and that the awards were as fair as possible to learners.

No comparisons to outcomes from previous series are appropriate since the context of the series was so unique.

WJEC published results on its website on Thursday 14 January 2021.
