Overview of the January 2021 seriesThursday 04 Mar 2021
January saw the award of the National/Foundation and Advanced Welsh Baccalaureate Skills Challenge Certificates, and unit assessments for the approved Level 2 and 3 Health and Social Care qualifications and approved Level 2 and 3 Child Care qualifications.
Unit assessments for approved GCSEs in English Literature, Welsh Literature and ICT were cancelled due to the level of disruption experienced by learners and the alternative arrangements being put in place for summer 2021.
There was a substantial change in entry patterns for the National/Foundation Welsh Baccalaureate Skills Challenge Certificate in comparison to January 2020 with a very large reduction in overall entries. However, there was an increase in 17-year-olds entered for the Advanced Skills Challenge Certificate.
There was no substantial change in entry patterns for Level 2 Health and Social Care and Child Care qualifications and this was the first award for Level 3.
There were no entries for re-sits in legacy GCSEs or for the legacy Health and Social Care Level 2 and Level 3 qualifications this series.
We closely monitored WJEC’s delivery of these qualifications and the approach taken to awarding grades in this context. We are confident that processes were followed as planned and that the awards were as fair as possible to learners.
