Position statement for assessment arrangements in 2021
Following discussion with Welsh Government, we have agreed to publish our advice alongside the recommendations from the Independent Review on Thursday 29 October 2020.
We shared our advice to support the decision-making process for awarding in 2021 with the Minister on 16 October.
Our advice to the Minister offers pragmatic solutions that:
- highlight the importance of external assessment to preserve objectivity
- balance this with increasing flexibility for schools and colleges
- minimise the workload for teachers and therefore maximise the time available for teaching and learning
- maintain fairness for learners and protect their wellbeing
After hearing from stakeholders from across Wales, we recognise the need for clarity and we are proposing a middle ground between centre assessment grades and exams. We have looked at each qualification type and have made separate recommendations for GCSE, AS and A level.
The Minister will announce her decision on 10 November.
