November Examinations 2020

The November exam series in Wales provides an opportunity for learners to sit GCSEs in English Language, Mathematics, Mathematics-Numeracy and Welsh Language. Exams in these subjects are timetabled to take place between 2- 11 November.

This is the first time that schools and colleges have been required to administer external General Qualification exams since the cancellation of the 2020 summer exam series. Learners will be familiarising themselves with the new normal and centres, as ever, will want to ensure that the exams run effectively. Schools and colleges must conduct their exams in accordance with the JCQ Instructions for Conducting Examinations (ICE) booklet. Centres must also follow Welsh Government guidance on social distancing and hygiene to ensure the safety of their leaners and staff. Welsh Government have also published an addendum to their guidance document to support schools and colleges in the logistics of exam administration during the continued pandemic.

The exams in this series are not adapted in any way as the series is most suitable for resit learners. We expect the number of learners entered for these exams to be relatively low, which may help with manageability at a centre level.

Centres should consider the types of potential disruption to any exam series and, where possible, develop contingencies to support decision making. We are aware that this will not be possible for all instances in these unprecedented times. We continue to work with WJEC and Welsh Government to understand the changing situation and context in which schools and colleges are working and will provide further guidance as necessary.
