Release Date: Thursday 14 June, 2018
Period covered: January - March 2018
Next Update: September 2018 (Provisional)

 Key Points

  • 53,670 certificates were awarded between January and March of 2018. This is a 1.2 per cent decrease compared to the same quarter in 2017, when there were 54,310 certifications.
  • This small decrease is in line with decreases in certificates issued in quarter 1 over the last 4 years and is largely driven by fewer certificates for Level 2 qualifications which includes Essential Skills qualifications.
  • Between April 2017 and March 2018 there were 420,075 certifications, a decrease of 12.3 per cent compared to 479,120 between April 2016 and March 2017
  • These decreases are mainly caused by changes to the qualifications that can count towards the Welsh Baccalaureate.
  • 2018 quarter 1 is the quarter with the lowest number of certifications in the last 5 years.
