4) Awarding the new qualification

Exam results are likely to fall

Exam results are likely to fall with the new, more robust qualification which may put students off sitting the exam in the future, especially given that the short course will not be available either.

Panel’s response

  • Schools will need to set realistic expectations with teachers, parents, pupils and governing bodies in terms of attainment.
  • Awarding bodies are required to adhere to a set of principles when awarding and these principles are based on statistical methods, including comparable outcomes approach, to ensure that learners taking the new qualification are neither advantaged nor disadvantaged compared to those who took the legacy qualification.
  • When taking new qualifications, however, schools may see more variability in their own results than is apparent at national level as they adapt differently to the demands of the new qualifications.
